Water Purification & Sanitation

Mitumba has a very limited amount of water which is currently being piped in from neighboring estates.  Frequently, when the pipes run dry, residents of Mitumba have to go to great lengths in order to find water for their drinking, cooking, and washing needs.  This of course includes the REM ( GOYA Ministries' sister organization in Kenya ) school.

Boiling water as a means of purification is dangerous due to the congested and highly flammable nature of the homes.  The goal of the water project is to first find a sustainable and reliable supply of water for Mitumba, and then to ensure that it is safe for drinking.  Until the first goal is met, various means of water purification systems (i.e. pumps, filters, and safe chemical treatments) will be used as a pilot project to determine which one will prove most efficient.

Our Water and Sanitation projects have been categorized together as we hope to align our efforts with those of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals. Once the water project is underway, more efforts will be focused on sanitation.

The Water Purification team has been hard at work researching different possibilities and partnerships through which they can achieve their goals. They bring something innovative almost every time they meet, and their excitement grows with every new development.
